Hiking in Sälenfjällen - day trips and longer hikes for the whole family

Welcome to the top! Granfjället in Stöten is, at 949 metres above sea level, the highest peak in the Sälen mountains. If you hike here, you get a fantastic view of both the Swedish and Norwegian mountain landscapes.

Are you planning to hire anything during the hike, such as a boat, fishing rod or other equipment? Remember to do it in time!

  • In the mountains, the weather changes quickly, so make sure you pack clothes for all weathers.
  • The first aid kit! Plasters for shoe chafing and mosquito repellent are essential.
  • Extra time. As everyone knows, everything takes longer with young children. So plan the walk and the time properly for a harmonious outing.
  • Bring good food that is suitable for even the smallest hikers, choose things that are suitable as encouragement when energy is lacking.

Destinations for your hike in Sälenfjällen

The easiest way to get to the start of the hiking trails is to follow the snowmobile trail from Soltorget or to go up under Långliften and then join the hiking trails.

You start your hike on the trail in Stöten and follow the red crosses towards the top of Granfjället. You can follow the trail to Västra Granfjället and down to Fuluforsmyren via the King's Trail and Granfjällssätern and then take the gravel road back to Stöten. Extend the tour if you wish by continuing north on Kungsleden and then turning back south again.

Another possibility is to follow the trail towards Närfjällsstugan. Here you can enjoy your packed lunch with a great view of the Northern Transtrandsfjällen nature reserve. Here there are several opportunities to continue hiking if you do not wish to return to Stöten directly. Continue up Stor-Närfjället and at the top you can choose to follow Sälenringen towards Närsjön via Saldalskojan or turn off towards Orrliden. Both hiking trails take you out on route 66.

If you are looking for an even longer day trip, you can continue down the valley towards Tooth valley. A couple of kilometres into the trail you can turn off towards Myflodammen for a slightly shorter walk or continue towards Kläppenskjulet on Sälenringen for a slightly longer walk.

Sälenringen is a natural choice for those who want a multi-day hike in the Sälen mountains. There are several resting huts and shelters along the trail. Get round the Sälen mountains on foot and experience everything from bare mountains to old-growth forest!
