Train before your ski trip

To maximise and get the most out of your skiing holiday - whether you're going downhill or cross-country - it's to your advantage if your body is prepared. This preparation will result in you avoiding training pain but also minimising the risk of injury. Your stamina will also be greater and you will feel better!

Exercise pain will hinder your skiing

Once you've got training pain, this will limit your skiing and also your movement patterns. It won't be as enjoyable and you won't be able to ski as much as you'd like.

The biggest reason you get exercise pain is that your muscles are not used to one type of load and react with an ache the day after exertion. Let your muscles get used to different types of exertion and you can reduce your training pain!

What can you do to strengthen your body and prevent exercise pain?

There are many ways you can prepare your body for skiing. What works best for you is a matter of trial and error. Below are some tips on exercises you can do before your ski season.

Exercise your shoulders

The shoulders are a key muscle group that will be put under strain during your skiing. If you have access to a gym, there are hundreds of exercises you can do with dumbbells.

If you don't have access to any equipment, you can try different shoulder exercises such as shoulder lifts, shoulder slaps or different types of push-ups.

Exercise your legs

Thighs and calves are large muscle groups that are guaranteed to be put under strain. Prepare your legs by going for a run (which will also give you a cardio workout) or train your thighs and calves with different exercises such as squats or weights.

Fitness training

Last but not least - build up your fitness!

When you go skiing, you need to be in good physical condition to be able to ski all day. If you are fit, you will also have a more enjoyable day and you will be able to maximise your time. Feeling tired and exhausted after the first day will not result in anything positive.
