Finding the right technique in Nordic walking

Successful Nordic walking requires a certain amount of coordination. Using several different muscles and body parts at the same time is not easy. That's why we want to give you our best tips to help you find the right technique for Nordic walking!

Advantages of rods

Perhaps the biggest advantage of Nordic walking is that it is a perfect form of exercise for most people. Old and young, rehabilitation and professional athletes, enthusiastic exercisers or walkers enjoying life. All you need is a cheerful disposition, a pair of poles and some comfortable shoes.

In addition to this, there are a number of other benefits, some of which are listed below:

  • A support during the walk The poles act as a perfect support during the walk. They help stabilise your step and reduce the risk of falling. You can also rest against them if you need a break during your walk.
  • Increase the pace on the slopes When you push off with the poles, you automatically get a higher speed in the step. Which is advantageous, not least on steep slopes where it is otherwise easy to lose pace.
  • Perfect in the mountains If you enjoy hiking in the mountains, it's the perfect time to bring your poles! Often you may need both a little support and extra speed to be able to push off properly, especially if the trail is tricky or rocky and your strength is running out.
  • Effective and gentle training Compared to walking without poles, this form of exercise is much gentler on the body - while increasing energy expenditure and raising the heart rate. The poles help take the strain off your knees, back, hips and feet, making it an excellent form of exercise for most people.
  • A safety tool Are you unsure about the condition of the slope? Maybe the ground looks wet and there is a risk of falling through, or the stones may be loose and pose a fall risk. Use the poles as a safety tool to feel around and avoid accidents.

The right technique for Nordic walking

Most likely, you will feel your body when you use the poles correctly. Successful Nordic walking involves a natural coordination of movements where arms and legs form a diagonal walk. Only when you have mastered the use of the poles will you increase the power of the walk. Here's how to do it:

  • Fasten the wand's hand strap around your hands so that you have a firm grip on the wand's handle. Many rods are labelled L for left hand and R for right hand.
  • Start by walking with your poles dragging on the ground. Then you will naturally feel which pole should meet which leg.
  • Then let your arms and poles follow in a swinging motion.
  • Once you have a natural movement in the diagonal walk, you can start pushing off the ground with the tip of your pole. This will increase your walking pace and the effectiveness of your run.
  • Keep in mind that shoulders should be relaxed to avoid pain.

We hope you have learnt some tips on how to find the right technique in Nordic walking so that you can enjoy long and beautiful walks. Good luck with your Nordic walking!
