Travelling with children - how to pack right
If it's the first time you're going on a longer trip with the kids, it can be difficult to know what to pack. But not anymore! In this article, we go through everything you need to take with you.
What equipment do children need?
Whether you're travelling in summer or winter, the basic rule is the same. Everyone needs the right equipment with them - and especially the children.
Contrary to popular belief, travelling with children is not a chore at all, quite the opposite! It's exciting, educational and above all, it's a great opportunity to spend time with the whole family.
Everyone needs to have the right equipment with them - especially children
To enjoy your outing with children, you need to bring the right equipment. That's why we've put together 5 tips below for you to consider!
- Start from yourself - What is absolutely essential for you is probably also essential for the children. So think about what you need to take with you.
- Clothing by weather - An expression that never goes out of style. If you're going on a trip, you want clothes that provide the best conditions. Use the layer-on-layer principle and choose materials that breathe, wick away moisture and keep you warm. The garments closest to the body can advantageously be made of wool, while outer garments such as jackets and trousers should be a stretchy material that can withstand both rain and wind.
- The right shoes - If you are going to walk a long way over difficult terrain, a sturdy boot that has been broken in for a long time is the best option. If the terrain is a little easier, a tennis shoe may work. If the excursion takes place in winter, the same boot can often work even then, as long as it is waterproofed. Remember to choose a shoe that is as light as possible and break it in on time to avoid blisters.
- A comfortable backpack - Of course, children should carry as much of their own luggage as possible. Not only will they feel more involved in the trip, but your own pack will be a little lighter. Make sure you choose a backpack that is fit for purpose and sits perfectly on your child's back. It shouldn't chafe or cut into anything, and it shouldn't be too heavy either. It can be helpful to have straps to hold on to, and buckles across the chest and hip to stabilise the backpack.
- Something to amuse yourself with - Although the excursion itself is a very exciting adventure with lots to see, the kids might actually get restless as soon as it's time to camp or stop. Bring something small to keep them entertained and keep their spirits up throughout the trip! For example, a deck of cards, a newspaper or why not a pair of binoculars so they can look out over the views?
Things to consider
Children are often resilient but can get tired, hungry and thirsty very quickly. Therefore, remember to rest regularly and have quick energy and water readily available. It is a good idea to have something small to eat in a pocket, hanging on your rucksack or in the outer compartment. It's also a good idea to always have access to new, warm and clean socks, and you might want to bring an extra blister plaster.
That's it! That's all you need for a successful outing with children! We hope you have a great time together and we wish you good luck on your trip.
