Sustainable focus in Stöten

How we work with sustainability in the plant
Charging stations for electric cars, complete waste sorting and a new pellet boiler that heats the entire facility with sawdust. These are some of the measures we are taking to reduce our carbon footprint.

"We receive thousands of guests every year and it takes a lot of energy to run our business - in the middle of the mountains. Doing so in an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly way is an obvious responsibility for us to take"
says Johan Thorn, CEO of Stöten.
The number of guests visiting Stöten is growing every year. And with the designation of "Ski resort of the year", bookings for the coming season have increased even more.
This requires measures that help to minimise environmental impact. By far the biggest energy saving measure has been the installation of a pellet boiler and the retirement of the previous oil and electric boilers that provided heat to Stöten.
Residues from local sawmills provide the heating
The boiler is fuelled by pellets made from pure sawdust, which is a residual product from local sawmills, and provides heating for conference facilities, Vattufjäll spa and baths, hotels, restaurants and office buildings.
In addition, the pellet boiler secures the hot water supply in the hotel complex, so that no one has to risk a cold shower when the lift is closed and all guests are showering almost simultaneously.

All accommodation that There are and new ones being built are exclusively ski-in ski-out, which means there is no need to use a car to get between the slopes and the accommodation.
- We have also fine-tuned the waste management so that our guests can sort all their waste at source, and the emptying procedures have been changed so that the lorries that come to empty the waste have fewer miles to travel," says Johan Thorn.
In recent years, the snowmaking system has been upgraded and new snow groomers have been purchased.
- We estimate that, through the investments in our snowmaking system in recent years, we have reduced our energy consumption by more than 20 per cent, while at the same time the system is laying snow on an area that is about 25 per cent larger than before the system was expanded. We have purchased new snow groomers that, with new technology, enable more efficient driving that has reduced fuel consumption by about ten per cent, which feels good," says Peter Myrvang, Operations Manager Stöten.
