Environmental policy

At Stöten, we take care of nature and protect our beautiful mountain landscape. We are constantly working to make the centre even more sustainable through training and energy-saving initiatives. The climate is a vital issue for us as a ski resort and reducing emissions is therefore a high priority.
Here are some of the steps we have taken to reduce our climate impact:
Waste & recycling
- We are participating in an environmental project with Sälen's hospitality industry to be able to present brand new recycling centres within a year, containing all fractions and which will make us an industry leader in green waste management.
- In Stöten, glass, newspapers, metal, plastic and paper packaging can be recycled through the 11 recycling centres located around the site.
Heating
- In 2018, a new pellet boiler was completed as part of the project Climate action, driven by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the EU, which is part of the entire international community's agreed endeavour to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Stöten and Sälen have received investment support from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency for the investment in the pellet boiler.
- The pellet boiler will reduce energy consumption by 70% in the city centre buildings at Stötentorget (hotel, restaurants and Vattufjäll).
- The pellet boiler is oversized for today's energy needs, and is intended to cover future heating needs for possible developments around Stötentorget.
- The ventilation system in the centre buildings at Stötentorget has been upgraded, resulting in lower energy consumption than before.
- We have installed geothermal boilers in all our new-build projects in recent years.
Snow & piste
- In recent years, we have invested SEK 50 million in a state-of-the-art snowmaking system in Stöten.
- Despite an expanded snow system that produces 35% more snow than before and with automated snow guns on more slopes, we use 25% less energy than before.
- New, more environmentally friendly snow groomers have been purchased with GPS systems to make grooming more efficient and to see where the snow should be distributed.
- Our snow groomer drivers and snow ploughs have been trained to work in a fuel-efficient and energy-efficient way.
Transport
- There are charging stations for electric cars in the Stötentorget car park outside Tempo.
- All accommodation in Stöten is close to a lift, so a car is not essential to get around the complex.
- All seasonal staff in Stöten live within walking distance of work.
GREEN 2020
Stöten participated in the EU project GREEN 2020, which aimed to make ski resorts more energy-efficient and sustainable.
GREEN 2020
The Interreg project GREEN 2020 ran between 2011 and 2014 and was a collaboration between the ski resorts in Swedish Dalarna and Norwegian Hedmark. The aim was to show the destinations different ways of achieving the EU's energy target of 20% energy efficiency, 20% increase in the share of renewable energy and 20% more efficient transport by 2020.
The main destinations in what is Scandinavia's largest ski area have participated in the project. Through close co-operation, studies, surveys and pilot tests have been combined with seminars, study trips and meetings. All ski resorts have invested both working time and money to be able to implement several of the action proposals that have emerged within the framework of GREEN 2020.
